Spring Clean Up! - May 3rd & 4th
The Village of Peoria Heights will hold a two-day Community Cleanup on Friday and Saturday, May 3 & 4, at the Public Works Garage, 3838 N. Boulevard Ave. in Peoria Heights.
Dumpsters will be available on site from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on each of those days.
The Village is working closely with its waste hauler, G&O Disposal, to coordinate the cleanup, which is a preemptive move aimed at preventing the littering of local alleys with large items that are not eligible for curb pickup.
That said, the landfill will not be accepting everything. Not eligible for disposal are tires, appliances (dishwashers, humidifiers, laundry machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, etc.), electronics (televisions, stereo equipment, computer monitors, keyboards, etc.), large batteries, hazardous waste including motor oils and wet paints, propane tanks and yard waste, among other items.
Residents are permitted to drop off one mattress and box spring.

IDOT to host open house on Route 29 project
Whether you have a personal interest or you’re just curious about the long-promised Illinois Route 29/Galena Road reconstruction project, you can learn about its progress and get some questions answered at an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) open house on Wednesday, March 20.
The informational meeting will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Peoria Heights Grade School gymnasium, 500 E. Glen Ave.
In 2019, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced that the road was in line for $68.5 million for a wholesale reconstruction project through the state’s Rebuild Illinois capital plan, which pledged to spend nearly $45 billion in total over six years, some $33 billion of it on transportation needs across the Land of Lincoln.
The Route 29 project encompasses that stretch of road from the McClugage Bridge to just north of Gardner Lane and sits within the boundaries of both the Village of Peoria Heights and the City of Peoria. The road is to be widened and repaved, among other improvements, with recreational paths constructed along the bluff on its west side. Route 29 is a major commuter corridor in this part of central Illinois and part of the Illinois Scenic Byways corridor.
The project is now in the Phase 1 stage of its development, with IDOT engaged in data collection from direct stakeholders in the corridor – residents, business owners, other property owners and tenants. Those responses will help IDOT do an environmental justice analysis and provide other documentation required by this investment.
If everything goes as planned, it is hoped that ground can be broken on the project beginning in 2027-28.
“Big projects take time,” said Peoria Heights Mayor Michael Phelan. “The infrastructure in this corridor has long needed attention, and one of the big payoffs will be a significant improvement in road safety well worth the study that goes into it.
“In many ways, this promises to be a transformational project for us.”

Federal funds coming to Peoria Heights for critical water infrastructure
The Village of Peoria Heights will be receiving nearly $960,000 in federal funding for a new water main in the Illinois Route 29 corridor, secured through the office of Congressman Eric Sorensen.
The funds targeted for Peoria Heights represent a portion of the $123 million delivered by Sorensen, a Democrat serving Illinois’ sprawling 17th Congressional District, through the U.S. House’s Community Project Funding process.
“Central Illinois is a special place, and it is my job to make sure my neighbors can live and grow a family in communities that are sustainable for future generations. One of the ways I can make sure that happens is by bringing tax dollars back home to support middle-class families,” said Sorensen.
“We are lucky here in Peoria Heights to have leaders in Washington, D.C., fighting on our behalf to find funding for projects not only of local but regional benefit,” said Peoria Heights Mayor Michael Phelan.
“It is very difficult for a small community to raise those kinds of dollars on its own. This is a critical investment along one of the primary commuter roads in this part of central Illinois, and Congressman Sorensen, to his enormous credit, recognized the importance of lining up the funding for this project now, in advance of the nearly $70 million rehabilitation and reinvention of that highway through Gov. Pritzker’s capital program.
“This effort will guarantee a safe and reliable water supply in an older neighborhood that is getting renewed attention from the Village. The residents there deserve the same quality infrastructure and level of services as those who live up the hill in Peoria Heights. We thank Congressman Sorensen for recognizing that, and for again going to bat for us here in Peoria Heights.”
The $959,752 for this project was included in the fiscal year 2024 federal appropriations bill signed into law this month by President Biden.
Currently, there is no timeline on the water main project. The Illinois Route 29/Galena Road project is tentatively set for groundbreaking, if everything proceeds according to plan, in the second half of this decade.
