Greenway path to be closed, detour provided

A significant portion of the Rock Island Greenway through Peoria Heights and part of Peoria will be closed beginning the week of Labor Day, with a detour to be provided for trail users likely through the end of November.

Illinois American Water Co. is installing a new underground water line to connect its service area in Peoria to Pioneer Parkway, with the Heights in between. The Village has its own municipal water company.

The work was to begin and be completed last winter, but for various reasons was delayed.

As it is, the water main work by Walker Excavating is scheduled to begin on Sept. 12. The plan is to start at the north end of the project and work south. Construction north of Glen is expected be

completed by the end of October, to the south of Glen by November. Again, a detour will be in place through at least Thanksgiving.

Illinois American will be restoring the path to its previous condition once the pipe work is completed.

“The recreational path is very important to us in the Village, but this is necessary work,” said Peoria Heights Mayor Michael Phelan. “We’ll be glad to have it behind us.”
