Advisory Question on Grocery Tax on ballot for March 17, 2026 Election

On the ballot at the upcoming March 17, 2026 General Primary Election will be an advisory question seeking residents’ input on whether the Village of Peoria Heights should re-establish the 1% local grocery sales tax on groceries sold within the Village.

BACKGROUND

Until this year, all sales of groceries within the State of Illinois were subject to a 1% sales tax.  Tax revenues from sales taking place within the Village of Peoria Heights were then distributed back to the Village for Village use.

Effective January 1, 2026, the state-wide 1% sales tax on grocery sales was repealed. In the absence of the state-wide tax, local municipalities were given authority to re-establish the grocery sales tax within their corporate limits.

The Village of Peoria Heights is considering re-establishing the 1% sales tax on groceries sold within the Village and is looking for your input.
